In 1930 a professional golf tournament was played at Trentham Golf Club. The local paper now called The Sentinel provided a cup for the winner. The Wallasey professional M.W.H. Davis was the winner, he kept the solid silver cup as part of the prize. Davis went on to become a member of the British Ryder Cup team in 1931. He played at the Scioto Club Columbus Ohio and 1933 at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club. He finished in the top ten of the British Open on four occasions.
In 1977 The Sentinel decided to promote a golf competition. The then CEO Max Hallis remembered that a cup was purchased by The Sentinel in 1930. The winner’s family were traced, and they generously donated the cup back to The Sentinel to be played for again.
The competition was devised as an individual knockout competition for members of golf clubs in The Sentinel’s circulation area. It is organised by a Committee of volunteers from members of local golf clubs and staff members of the Sentinel.
Another notable name to play in and support the competition was a young gentleman at the time. David Gilford went onto to play twice in the Ryder Cup and win six times on the European Tour.
As the competition progressed a Shield was introduced to provide a competition for higher handicap golfers. By tradition, the final has mostly been played at Trentham Golf Club where the cup was first played for in 1930. During this time, the competition has raised over £90,000 for local charities.
We are indebted to Trentham Golf Club for staging the final and Newcastle Gold Club the semi-Finals, and local Golf Clubs who allow the preliminary rounds to be played during the season. Also, The Sentinel for the coverage of the competition at every stage and their continued support.
A final thanks to the thousands of competitors who have played and supported the foremost golf competition in the area.
